Why We Keep Talking About Watering Your Fence Posts Every Summer

If you've followed us for a while, you've probably heard us talk about watering your fence posts. We know it may seem repetitive, but there's a reason we bring it up every summer. This time of year is when it becomes absolutely critical. Over the past week alone, we've been out on several service calls for leaning fences, and every single one had the same cause: extremely dry soil.

What Happens When the Ground Gets Too Dry?

North Texas summers are brutal. As the soil dries out, it shrinks and begins to crack. When that happens, the soil pulls away from the concrete and fence posts below ground. Once the soil separates from the post, the post is no longer held tightly in place. Even a well-built fence with properly installed concrete footings can begin to move. As the posts shift, you'll start to notice:

Leaning fence sections
Gates that drag or won't latch correctly
Fence lines that no longer look straight

The problem doesn't stop there. When we finally get rain or your sprinkler system starts watering again, the soil expands and tightens back around the post. Unfortunately, it often locks the fence into its new leaning position instead of pushing it back where it belongs.

Why Leaning Fences Get Worse Over Time

Once a fence begins to lean, the entire structure is put under stress. Rails begin to twist and warp. Pickets start pulling loose or warping. Gates become harder to operate because the opening is no longer square. One of the biggest misconceptions is that we can simply straighten every leaning fence. In many cases, we can straighten the posts. However, if the fence has been leaning for weeks or months, the rails and pickets have already warped into that position. Even after the posts are corrected, the fence may still appear wavy because the lumber has permanently changed shape. That's why prevention is always less expensive than repair.

The Simple Maintenance That Can Add Years to Your Fence

The good news is that preventing this is easy. During periods of extreme heat and drought, water around each fence post at least twice per week. A good rule of thumb is to soak the soil in about a 2-foot radius around each post. You're not trying to flood the area. The goal is simply to keep the soil consistently moist so it doesn't shrink and separate from the concrete. Think of it the same way you protect your home's foundation. Consistent moisture helps the soil remain stable.

This isn't because of the quality of the fence or installation. It's because extreme soil movement is an environmental condition that is outside anyone's control. Fortunately, it's also something that can usually be prevented with regular watering.
